Back to the Continuing
Education |
"The more you know, the safer you'll be." That's a concept we whole-heartedly endorse.
We believe that a certification card is a license to learn, and that the education process never
stops. For that reason, we offer a number of continuing education classes, designed to
increase your knowledge and enhance your interaction with the underwater world. The
fee for all courses covers instruction, course materials, textbook (except when marked **), and
certificiation cards when applicable. The number of lectures, pool sessions,
and dives (L/P/D) and length of the class are listed for each course, as well as any
pre-requisites. Dates listed are for the first class meeting.
Please note that the courses listed in RED
are FREE!!
NAUI ADVANCED CLASS
This class can be taken right after you’re
certified or after you’ve got a few dives under your belt. Covers deep
diving, navigation, night diving, light salvage, search & recovery,
dive planning, air consumption, and multilevel diving with an intro to
dive computers. One lecture, 2 days of diving in Avalon (5-6 dives),
special rate for rental gear if needed. Last full weekend of March, June,
September, and December (with a class meeting on the Thursday preceding).
BEACH DIVING/NAVIGATION
Beach diving is an integral part of the SoCal dive scene. Likewise, so is
knowing how to get back to the same place where you started the dive.
(Actually, that's a critical skill no matter where you dive.) It's easy to
be trained properly to do both. That’s why we offer this class, which is
designed for the newbie or the old salt. It’s a half-day that consists
of an orientation, some practice entries, navigation tips & tricks,
and one supervised dive. We provide the instruction for free and give you
a special rate if you need rental gear. Please note
that this dive is weather/surf-dependent and might be canceled on short
notice. Second weekend (sometimes Saturday,
sometimes Sunday) of every month,
9AM-1PM, at Veteran’s Park in Redondo Beach. (Bring quarters for the
parking meters.)
CPR/OXYGEN/1ST AID
Learn basic CPR and 1st aid skills, along with oxygen administration as
prescribed by the PADI "Emergency First Responder" course. One
eight-hour session fulfills all requirements. Includes books. For divers
and non-divers alike. Third Saturday of every odd-numbered month.
FISH I.D.
This is probably the most useful class you can possibly take after
your basic training. It's one thing to know how to dive. It's quite
another to learn to understand what it is that you're seeing underwater.
This class teaches you how to identify the fish that you’ll see by
shape, habitat, coloration, and more. Learn how to find and identify the
"top 40" fish you’ll see when diving California waters. And
even though this course focuses on our local species, the techniques are
adaptable to any place in the world you go diving. First Thursday of every
month, 7-10PM.
NIGHT DIVING
Everything looks different at night. This is a supervised beach night dive
designed to give you a controlled taste of what it’s like to dive when
it’s dark. Please note that this dive is
weather/surf-dependent and might be canceled on short notice.
Second Wednesday of every month at Veteran’s Park in Redondo, 8-10PM. We’ll
look for squid in the canyon when possible.
PHOTO WORKSHOP
Designed for both the new and experienced
photographer, this hands-on workshop will discuss basic camera techniques,
digital vs. film concerns, tips & tricks, and photo successes &
disasters. Participants are encouraged to bring their own slides &/or
prints for critique and discussion of what worked, what didn't, and how to
get better. Offered the second Thursday of every odd-numbered month,
7-10PM.
RESCUE
Learn basic techniques to help both your buddy and yourself. Tired
diver tows, approaching panicky divers, and unconscious diver rescues. One
lecture (evening), sometimes a pool, two beach ocean sessions (weekend).
Includes rescue textbook. Also requires CPR/1st Aid. Third Thursday &
Saturday/Sunday of every even-numbered month.
SQUID DIVE
Every year from roughly December through March,
common market squid complete their life cycle by laying eggs. Over the
years Redondo Canyon off of Veteran's Park has produced reliable squid and
egg sightings. These night dives are specifically tailored to go locate
eggs and hopefully see mating squid. Please note
that this dive is weather/surf-dependent and might be canceled on short
notice. On a late-month Wednesday December-March at Veteran’s
Park in Redondo, 8-10PM.
TABLES & COMPUTERS
Get a better grasp of the science and physics
behind dive tables and dive computers from Boyle to Haldane and beyond.
Learn why the U.S. Navy, NAUI, and PADI tables are so different.
Understand how dive computers compute. The more you know, the better you’ll
be able to understand. Offered April, July, and October, 7-10PM.
